Milking hours

I heard recently where a student of Waterford Institute of Technology, milks a large herd of cows over 500 as part of his studies. He works on a host farm and as he says the conditions are actually excellent……..for the cows ! but what made life better for all concerned was the reliable supply of hot water from a recently installed dairy geyser. Obviously this carefully considered investment was made the owner and chief decision maker and she had looked at several options before going with us. When I brought up the topic of long hours on her farm between milking and calf rearing she was quite philosophical in that its a mental game as much as and if not more than a physical endurance. Long term this is the commitment required to run this type of business.
